Mi piace sempre molto intervistare le persone che tanto ci motivano nel nostro ambiente sportivo. Gente che dà un contributo con la propria esperienza ed il proprio approccio all’allenamento. Oggi però nello spazio di Gripebenditalia più che una comune intervista, leggerete una sintesi della vita di un uomo che spesso ha mostrato la Forza al pubblico di Coney Island, come gli strongman di un tempo ormai lontano. Una Persona umile ma dalla grandissima forza, il Grande Sonny Barry!

Con poco tempo libero e con poca affinità per la tecnologia, Sonny  ha preferito alla classica intervista una piccola panoramica della sua storia. Eccovi il sunto:

Sono nato il 22 agosto a Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania. I miei hobby e interessi includono imprese di forza, pugilato, “catch-as-catch-can” wrestling (tecnica del XIX secolo circense) o shoot Wrestling (tecnica Giapponese con contatto), arti marziali, hotrods e musica.

Mi piace ballare e cantare Karaoke. L’intrattenimento sarà sempre una mia passione. Quando ero più giovane, mio ​​padre portò a casa degli strumenti musicali da Eighth Street Music a Philadelphia. Portò portato la batteria, una chitarra, una fisarmonica, un microfono ed un amplificatore. Ho preso tutto tranne la fisarmonica! Negli anni ’60 ero l’headliner di una band chiamata The Unforgettables. Più tardi, c’era Sonny & the Shades. Negli ultimi 20 anni, ho suonato la chitarra e cantato da Leader in un gruppo di vecchi successi chiamato Stay Tuned.

Ho iniziato a sollevare pesi all’età di 12 anni. Ho realizzato il mio primo set di pesi con due barattoli di vernice da 1 gallone, cemento e un tubo. Alla fine presi un tubo più grande e ci infilai dei cerchi per le auto. Ho amato l’Armwrestling e la Boxe. Spesso sfidavo gli altri bambini del vicinato. Un po’ vincevo e un po’ perdevo … è stato un inizio! Per circa 10 anni della mia vita, mi sono allenato con George Everly a facendo wrestling tre sere a settimana al Turners Hall di Riverside, nel New Jersey. Attualmente, ho una cintura nera nel judo, una cintura marrone di terzo grado in Aikido e una cintura marrone nel karate. All’età di 38 anni nel 1984, ero un concorrente Golden Gloves.

Mi sono presentato al mondo delle prove di Forza quando ho incontrato il mio buon amico Greg Matonick. Noi facevamo Armwrestling nell’ufficio della mia stazione di servizio nel 1983 quando entrò per comprare il gas. Avevamo sentito parlare l’uno dell’altro attraverso un amico comune. Greg mi ha battuto con la mano destra e poi l’ho battuto con la mano sinistra. Ho detto a Greg, “Immagino che questo ci renda uguali!” Mi ha chiesto se fossi stato capace di piegare un ferro di cavallo, gli chiesi di mostrarmi come farlo, e così venne il mio turno. Con sua sorpresa, lo piegai e fu l’inizio della nostra amicizia e della mia infinita passione per intraprendere nuove imprese di forza. Insegnai a Greg a lottare, lui mi insegnò a piegare.

Sono stato sposato con mia moglie Trish, bellissima e affettuosa dal 1975. Abbiamo avuto tre bambini meravigliosi insieme: Adam, David e Brenda. Credo in Dio e mi ritengo un  cristiano salvato da Gesù Cristo. Questi sono i più grandi doni che abbia mai ricevuto.

Original Interview (English Version)

I always like to interview people who motivate us so much in our sports environment. People who contribute with their experience and their approach to training. Today, however, in Gripebenditalia’s space, more than a common interview, you will read a summary of the life of a man who often showed the Force to the public of Coney Island, like the strongman of a long time ago. A humble person but with great strength, the Great Sonny Barry!

“I was born August 22nd in Philadelphia, PA.  My Hobbies and interests include feats of strength, boxing, “catch-as-catch-can” wrestling (or shoot wrestling), martial arts, hotrods, and music.

I love to dance and sing Karaoke.  Entertaining will always be a passion of mine.  When I was younger, My dad brought home some musical instruments from Eighth Street Music in Philadelphia.  He brought home drums, a guitar, an accordion, a microphone, and an amp.  I took up everything but the accordion!  In the 1960s I was the headliner in a band called The Unforgettables.  Later, there was Sonny & the Shades.  For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing guitar and singing lead in an oldies band called Stay Tuned.

I started lifting weights at the early age of 12.  I made my first set of weights out of two 1 gallon paint cans, concrete, and a pipe.  Eventually I got a bigger pipe and put car rims on it.  I loved to arm wrestle and box.  Often, I’d challenge the other kids in the neighborhood.  Win some, lose some…it was a start!  For about 10 years of my life, I trained under George Everly in catch wrestling 3 nights a week at Turners Hall in Riverside, NJ.  Currently, I have a Black Belt in Judo, a 3rd degree Brown Belt in Aikido, and a Brown Belt in Karate.  At age 38 in 1984, I was a Golden Gloves contender.

I was introduced to the world of feats of strength when I met my good friend Greg Matonick.  We arm wrestled in the office of my gas station in 1983 when he came in to buy gas.  We had heard about each other through a mutual friend.  Greg beat me right handed then I beat him left handed.  I said to Greg, “I guess this makes us even!”.  He asked me if I could bend a horseshoe.  I ask him to show me how, which he did, and then it was my turn.  To his surprise, I did it!!  That was the beginning of our friendship and my endless passion for taking on new feats of strength.  I taught Greg to wrestle, he taught me to bend.

I’ve been married to my beautiful, loving wife Trish since 1975.  We have 3 wonderful children together – Adam, David, and Brenda.  I believe in God Almighty and am a Christian saved by Jesus Christ.  These are the greatest gifts I have ever received.”
